24 Cities later, South India still takes me by surprise- by Ajit

By the age of 22, I had travelled through 24 cities across India. Most of my journeys had been across North India, with a few experiences in the West and Goa. I believed I knew India's diversity well until South India showed me there was still so much more to discover. Then I travelled to South India. And honestly, I was speechless. From ancient temples and mist-covered tea gardens to spice-scented forests and warm-hearted people, every destination offered something unique. This journey through Tamil Nadu and Kerala wasn't just another trip it completely changed the way I looked at India. This journey through Tamil Nadu and Kerala reminded me that India is not one story, but thousands waiting to be explored.

Meenakshi Amman Temple-Madurai

Madurai welcomed me with history at every corner. The magnificent Meenakshi Amman Temple, with its towering gopurams and thousands of intricate sculptures, was unlike anything.

I had ever seen. Every carving eflected centuries of devotion and craftsmanship.

Beyond the temple, the colourful local markets were full of life, offering handicrafts, textiles, jewellery, and local flavours.

One of my favourite moments in Madurai was wearing a traditional Tamil Veshti (dhoti). It was a simple experience, but it made me feel a little more connected to the city's culture and traditions.

As the sun set, dinner at Gateway Madurai overlooked the city's glowing skyline, while my stay at Heritage Madurai beautifully reflected the region's culture and hospitality.

The drive to Munnar was unforgettable. The plains slowly gave way to rolling hills blanketed with endless tea plantations, cool mountain air, and drifting mist that made every turn picture perfect.

Lockhart Tea Estate-Munnar

Visiting Lockhart Tea Estate and its tea factory gave me a new appreciation for every cup of tea. Surrounded by the nature, Munnar reminded me that the best journey is often the slowest.

If Munnar was a feast for the eyes, Periyar was a retreat for the soul.

Known for its rich biodiversity, spice plantations, and scenic landscapes, the region offered experiences that felt both educational and deeply immersive.

Walking through a spice plantation was both fascinating and educational. Learning about cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves revealed why Kerala is known as the Land of Spices.

Periyar wasn't just about nature. Witnessing the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu was an unforgettable cultural experience.

While the landscapes were breathtaking, it was the culture that left the deepest impression. From traditional meals served on banana leaves to the warmth of every interaction, South India made me feel truly welcome.

Flavors of South India

As someone working in the travel industry, I realised that the best destinations are remembered not just for what you see, but for how they make you feel.

After travelling through 24 cities across India, I thought I knew my country. South India proved there was still so much more to discover.

Madurai gave me heritage. Munnar gave me peace. Periyar gave me perspective.

South India isn't just a destination it's an experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.
