With modern expressways shrinking travel times, weekend getaways have never felt more accessible. I recently set off on a short but enriching 01-night journey to Alwar, a destination that seamlessly blends history, nature, and culture — all within effortless reach via the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The drive itself was a reminder that sometimes the journey can be just as rewarding as the destination.

Alwar welcomed me with its storied grandeur. Bala Quila, standing sentinel over the city, offered commanding views and a powerful connection to the region’s regal legacy. A stroll through the serene Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri further deepened the historical narrative — a masterpiece of architecture steeped in local folklore. In the heart of the town, the modest temple at Gol Chakkar offered a peaceful pause, while the bustling old market showcased Alwar’s vibrant everyday life.

No visit to Alwar is complete without indulging in its culinary heritage, and I made sure to sample the iconic Kalakand — a delicacy the city is famous for. The rich, melt-in-the-mouth sweet perfectly reflected the simple yet refined charm of the town.

Alwar’s proximity to the Sariska Tiger Reserve infuses it with a quiet wilderness appeal. Though time did not permit a full safari, just being in such close proximity to one of Rajasthan’s key wildlife havens added a refreshing, untamed dimension to my visit.

My stay at The Fern Resort provided a much-needed dose of tranquility, surrounded by natural beauty and modern comforts. True to its ecotel philosophy, the resort offers an environmentally responsible stay without compromising on comfort — the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

Perhaps the most unexpected highlight of this trip was my lunch at Fauzi Raj Restaurant, a local institution that has been serving guests since 1999. Here, food is still prepared on traditional chulhas, imparting a rare, rustic flavor to every dish. In a refreshing departure from conventional dining, guests are welcome to bring their own food, with the restaurant focusing solely on creating a warm, hospitable dining experience — something both novel and comforting in today’s fast-paced world.

In the span of just one night, Alwar offered me much more than I anticipated — a glimpse into Rajasthan’s heritage, a brush with nature, authentic flavors, and a unique cultural vibe.
