As part of an enriching Familiarization (FAM) tour, I had the opportunity to explore the many shades of Rajasthan—a land where history breathes through frescoed havelis, majestic forts, and opulent palaces. This immersive journey took us beyond the well-trodden path, offering a firsthand experience of the region’s finest hospitality, thoughtfully restored heritage properties, and immersive cultural encounters. From desert cities to lakeside retreats, every stop on this itinerary reflected the enduring spirit and splendor of Rajasthan.
Arrival in Mandawa – The Painted Town

Our journey kicked off in Mandawa, a picturesque town in the Shekhawati region, famous for its elaborately painted havelis and timeless ambiance. Walking through its winding lanes felt like stepping into a living museum, where every wall whispered a story from a bygone era.
Castle Mandawa, a former fortress turned heritage hotel, stood out for its majestic architecture, sweeping courtyards, and regal charm that transported us to an era of grandeur.

Among the many heritage gems we explored—including Grand Haveli, Vivaana Culture, Koolwal Kothi, Legacy by Machan, Castle Mandawa, The Desert Resort, Roop Niwas Kothi, and Gulab Haveli—the true highlight was our stay at the Vivaana Museum. This beautifully restored haveli, doubling as a cultural museum, captivated us with its antique décor, vibrant frescoes, and soulful ambiance, setting the perfect tone for our Rajasthan adventure.
Bikaner – Desert Royalty

From Mandawa, we journeyed to Bikaner, a regal desert city that effortlessly blends tradition with opulence. Our exploration began at the spectacular Junagarh Fort, one of the few major forts in Rajasthan not built on a hilltop. This architectural marvel, constructed in the late 16th century, boasts stunning courtyards, ornate balconies, and intricately decorated interiors. We were awestruck by the elaborate mirror work, frescoes, and lattice windows that reflect Bikaner's rich heritage.

We also visited some of the city’s most iconic royal residences—Laxmi Niwas Palace, Lallgarh Palace, and the thoughtfully curated Narendra Bhawan, which seamlessly blends princely heritage with contemporary design. These site visits showcased Bikaner’s immense potential for premium heritage and boutique hospitality. Our stay at The Heritage Bikaner was comfortable and offered warm hospitality in a charming setting, city itself, with its cultural vibrancy and lesser-known charm, proved to be a hidden gem for experiential and heritage travel.
Jaisalmer – The Golden City
On our way to Jaisalmer, we made a memorable stop at the majestic Gajner Palace, nestled beside a tranquil lake. Once a hunting lodge for the Bikaner royals, this heritage palace provided a picturesque glimpse into Rajasthan’s regal past.

Jaisalmer, with its sun-drenched sandstone architecture and timeless desert charm, was truly a highlight of the journey. Our days began with a visit to the majestic Jaisalmer Fort, one of the few living forts in the world, where winding alleys, ancient temples, and artisan shops offered a glimpse into centuries of heritage. We explored the intricately carved Patwon Ki Haveli which stood as elegant reminders of the city’s rich mercantile past.

The vibrant markets of the old city were a sensory delight—brimming with mirror-work textiles, handcrafted leather goods, silver jewellery, and the aroma of local spices. Each corner seemed to echo stories of the desert and its enduring spirit.

Our stay at Fort Rajwada offered regal comfort with its traditional décor and warm hospitality. We also visited a selection of premium properties to understand their offerings—Taj Gorbandh Palace, Storii by ITC Hotels, Jaisalmer Marriott Resort & Spa, and Rupal Residency, Saira Fort Sarovar Portico, WH Mandir Palace, Hotel Rawalkot, SKK The Fern Resort, Hotel Gulaal each reflecting a unique blend of heritage and luxury.

One of the most memorable moments was the exhilarating jeep and camel safaris across the golden dunes. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a honeyed glow across the sands, the desert came alive in all its mystique. The vast silence, punctuated only by the rhythm of hooves and the rustle of wind, made for a magical and deeply grounding experience—capturing the essence of Jaisalmer in its purest form.
